How to use
- Type some text or choose a file.
- The four hashes appear immediately.
- Copy a hash and compare it with the value published by the source.
How do you verify a downloaded file?
Many sites publish a SHA-256 hash next to the download link. Choose the file in the tool and compare the resulting hash with the published one. If they match exactly the file is intact, and any difference means it is damaged or modified.
Which algorithm should I use?
SHA-256 is the practical choice for most uses. SHA-1 is no longer safe against deliberate attacks and remains acceptable only for detecting accidental damage. SHA-512 gives a longer, stronger hash. Do not use these hashes alone to store passwords.
Frequently asked questions
Can the text be recovered from a hash?
No. A hash is a one-way operation and cannot be reversed.
Are files uploaded?
No. Files are read and hashed locally in your browser.
Where is MD5?
Browsers do not support MD5 in the standard crypto interface, and because it is weak for security we did not include it.
